It is foggy outside!

So I am off to try to get some neat graveyard pictures. Perfect weather for this. Spooky and misty. I hope the angel looks as good as I think it will.

In the meantime, other pictures Patrick took of me and I edited:

Candy Cane Lane

Candy Cane Lane is a street in Seattle's Ravenna neighborhood that does a spectacular job of decorating every year. We like walking through it instead of driving, since that way you can really take your time and not worry about cars backing up behind you. Plus you have a much easier time taking pictures. Here are the ones from this year:

The carousel in the middle rotates around the big shrub.

The moonglow through these bare trees with ornaments was just lovely

Bit fuzzy, sorry about that.

I loved these lights in the bushes so much, I had to take two pictures!

Aww.

THERE IS A GOD.

We once again have a functional sewer line! Dear lord was that a nightmare. Our toilet worked for all of like 3 uses before it started not flushing again, but mercifully the landlady was very responsive and authorized payment for it, so I could set up the repairs the company had told us last night were basically necessary unless we wanted to have a few feet of raw sewage in our house or poop in a bucket.

We had to have the poor plumber guys out again this evening (in the pouring rain, I might add) to dig a 3' deep hole and find out where the horrible clog was. This turned out to be a Y bend in the line which had formerly been capped on one outlet with cement. This had broken, and a whole bunch of dirt had gotten into the line, which I'm sure was exacerbated by the near flood-stage rains we've had lately.

They ripped that thing out and put in the part that is supposed to be there, the cleanout (which by the way is required by code and so we were sort of living illegally by not having one), and fixed everything up.

OUR TOILET FLUSHES, Y'ALL! Mere words cannot express how happy I am about this. You do not truly appreciate your toilet until you do not have it. I kind of want to go hug it now but, y'know, ew.

I love you, Puget Sound Plumbing & Heating. If I weren't already married to an awesome dude, I would consider dating your company. I am THAT happy. (I settled for serving the plumbers hot tea, for which they were very grateful. I would be too if I had to dig a hole in the chilly rain.)

Also, thank god we rent this house. If we didn't, we would be out around $2660 by now. This has been a major learning experience. I now know more than I ever thought I'd need to about showers, sinks, toilets, and sewer line snaking.

In other news, I played through Chopin's Prelude in E Minor tonight while waiting for them to finish (playing kind of calms my nerves, a little), and it wasn't terrible. I've never played it before, so I did my usual learning bit of playing the right hand, then the left, and then putting them together. It was slow going, but it sounded nice. Besides, doesn't largo mean slow anyway? That's what I'm telling myself. It's nice to know I haven't lost it all in the decade and a half or so since I quit really playing.

Thank you, darling parents, for giving me all those lessons and forcing my lazy self to practice. I owe you.

And the toilet saga continues.

I HATE TOILET PROBLEMS.

Horrible. The landlady's son came out today and replaced the seal and snaked that line with his regular snake, but now the shower won't drain (edit: finally drained, but VERY slowly), and the toilet won't drain when flushed. This is not good.

We ended up having to call a plumber, and they are on their way now. I cannot emphasize enough just how much I don't like this situation. I don't know if it's tree roots getting into the lines or what (that's what the last plumber said), but it is terrible! And there is some sort of air/swamp gas/poop fumes bubbling up through the toilet, so that's bad. Although it doesn't reek, which is good...

Please show up soon, Toilet Person. We need you.

Adventures in Asthma OR How I Ended Up Running Through A Dark Parking Lot in the Pouring Rain at 2AM

Last night we had some excitement, as you may have already deduced from the title of this post.

Earlier in the day, around 4pm, Patrick had insisted on cleaning the shower and tub himself. I'd kept offering to do it, but he gallantly refused me and went ahead. He used a Tilex mold and mildew spray that was supposed to soak into the stuff for a bit and then be rinsed off, along with Comet for the tub.

Unbeknownst to us (because we were stupid and didn't look), that Tilex spray is not supposed to be used by someone with chronic asthma problems, like my darling spouse. The fumes were nasty, as fumes usually are, but he seemed okay afterward when he headed off to his recording session.

As the session progressed, he found himself more and more short of breath. The gig lasted until 10, and he got home about 10:30. He and I had a bite to eat, and then I began getting ready for bed around 11. For me, this includes taking my nightly pills, among which is Ambien.

Around 11:15, Patrick began having real issues with his breathing. Albuterol was not helping, despite taking a LOT if it, and the attack was steadily getting worse. We decided not to wait any longer (these things can kill you if they get bad enough), and threw on some street clothes before heading to the ER.

When we got there, it was fortunately pretty quiet, so we were seen right away. I had dropped Patrick off at the entrance to the ER while I looked for parking, as the tiny lot in front of the entrance was full, mostly with cop cars.

The doctor checked Patrick out, doing a peak flow reading and listening to the wheezing in his lungs, and got him breathing from a nebulizer that administered some medicine into him better than his inhaler could. He used that until it ran dry, and started feeling better. They also gave him some steroid pills, and he has to take a few more of those to ensure it doesn't come back. He's also supposed to go see his doctor about getting on a new maintenance drug for his asthma, because he's having to use his inhaler way too often.

I had a feeling that I'd be having a panic attack after we left the hospital, since that's my usual MO, so I took half a Klonopin, and I'm pleased to report that the only panic attack I had was in a dream last night. So I guess it does work. I tend to hold myself together really well while something traumatic is happening, but then about half an hour later I'll freak out when it dawns on me what exactly just happened. I figured it was better to prevent that before it got started.

After Patrick was given the all clear to go home, we went outside and surveyed the weather with dismay. While we'd been inside, it had begun pouring, and there were big puddles everywhere. Since Patrick couldn't run out to the car, I got him to hold my purse and scarf while I rolled up my pants and made a dash for it. Definitely a surreal experience running through the dark in pounding rain for your car while on Ambien and Klonopin, let me tell you.

I couldn't remember exactly where it was at first, since the entire parking lot basically looks the same (and has bunches of trees here and there blocking your view, along with it being the middle of the night and pouring rain), so I went down one way, stopped, looked around and got my bearings, then took off another way and there it was. Whew.

Anyway, I was fine to drive (surprisingly), so I went back and picked him up at the entrance as soon as I'd fetched the car, and we went home, getting back about 2:30am. I was out basically as soon as my head hit the pillow, and I think he was too. He's got pills to get today and has to see his doctor ASAP about those new meds, so we are still in a flurry around here.

I'm so glad he's okay. It was quite the adventure. Needless to say, he will never be cleaning the shower again. Or at least not unless we find some sort of product that is okay for asthmatics, which seems kind of unlikely...

If you're a spider hater, avoid this post.

We have a number of fairly large cat spiders around our house this year, but the one directly to the left of our back door takes the cake. When I was young I used to feed them creepy bugs (I loathe crane flies), and they always got really huge from the rich diet. Now I don't have an entire summer to fill with spider-feeding, so these are left to their own devices, but they seem to be doing well.

I took this last night after dark and applied a sepia filter to better highlight its markings.
They're really quite attractive spiders, with the pretty back markings. I don't want them in my house, but I definitely appreciate the work they do outside. Eat those obnoxious bugs, spiders!

My furry practicing partner

The Widget has been keeping me company while I practice. She seems to enjoy it. This is the piece I'm working on, Pachelbel's Canon in D. It's very pretty and it has a lot of variations on a single theme (six pages' worth). It's not difficult, and it's a good way for me to remember how to read bass clef and get my fingers slowly stronger again. Patrick gets to hear it over and over! haha Fortunately he's a musician, so he can appreciate the necessity of playing things a million times. I'm very lucky to have him.

Well, the pills don't work all the time. But I knew that.

Last night SUCKED.

It took me hours to fall asleep, so I was probably up until about 2am or so, and then once I finally did, I had horrible nightmares. They were the old kind, with gallons of blood, being chased and screaming. Two different serial killers stalked me, one of whom was a cannibal, which I guess gets points for variety.

After those, it was just tons of people killing each other and trying to kill me, too. There was a flayed, bloodied up man's upper half sitting in a corner and staring at me with blank white eyes, little Rue from The Hunger Games getting her neck snapped by someone and then sinking lifeless with a horrible contorted and broken spine to the bottom of a pool, people being burned to death with blackened, bubbling skin and so forth.

I woke up a couple times here and there and tried to stay awake long enough that the dreams would fade, but the fatigue was so strong that it kept dragging me back under, and I could see the dream continuing even before I was fully asleep again. This went on all night.

I'd gone in the other bedroom to sleep around 1:45am because Patrick was snoring and I couldn't sleep, and after I woke up from the second round of stalking I went back to our bed in the hope that his presence would stave off more of them, but no, they just continued.

When he left to coach the Seattle Youth Symphony kids, I was so exhausted from my nightmares that I just went back to sleep, trying to get something restful out of it. My limbs were so heavy and my heart was pounding every time I'd wake up. When he got back, the dreams had turned to normal ones, so I'd gotten enough rest that I could wake up fully without feeling sick to my stomach from exhaustion.

I guess I was due for one of these. The pills I take every night have eliminated a lot of them, but not all. Fortunately I had this one on a weekend, so it didn't have a detrimental impact on my work. Ugh. I hope tonight is better.

The Great Crane Thief Plays With Her Loot

It dawned on me last night as I was watching Monkey with her purloined crane that my phone can actually take videos now, so here you go. She's gotten really sneaky about it. She pretends to be all loving and cuddly, so she'll come sit between your arms and purr until you are put off your guard. Then she goes in for the theft!

Y'all, I found the hairball.

Yep. That's all I'm gonna say about that.

Phantom Hairball

Normally we all sleep together in a pile on the bed, and last night was no different. Usually (looking from the head of the bed to the foot) Patrick's on the right, Gurgles is between his feet, I'm on the left, Widget's to my left, and Monkey's at my feet. That is a lot of bodies on one bed.

Anyway, we were all asleep when suddenly around 4am I woke up to the sound of Widget in the beginning horky throes of coughing up a hairball right next to my head. I was barely awake, so all I had time to think was Widget... NO, OFF! My sleepy self decided the best way to avoid a hairball on the face was to shove her off the bed, so I did that with one arm, and then flailed around with it making sure she wasn't on the night stand about to throw up all over my phone.

Patrick woke up partially at some point around here. It's hard to sleep through simultaneous puke noises and wife flailing, even for him.

I came to a bit more and went out to the kitchen to get some paper towels, as I was sure by the sound of it she'd splattered hairball all over the wall or something, and coming back in I told Patrick to close his eyes so I could turn on the light without blinding him. I looked around for a while on my hands and knees and nothing, so I went around the house looking for where she might have dumped it. No hairballs anywhere.

Either being shoved off the bed interrupted her hairball progression and it never happened at all or there is something unpleasant waiting for me somewhere...

Lightning

Someone (not me) managed to get a picture of the lightning we were having around here. This picture was taken looking at Alki (Alk-eye) Avenue. Alki is across the water from Seattle, and you can see downtown once you get onto the strip.

This was more of the cloud-to-ground lightning.
Looks like the storms are set to pass by Thursday, although we didn't get anything up in Shoreline either yesterday or this morning. At least it's so wet here usually that we didn't have to worry about fire.

Caught in the act

He has no shame.
