We figured out that in order to entice Widget to sit companionably near us (she eschews the couch in favor of the piano or guest bed, for some reason), we would have to place Patrick's work bag on the table. She has a weird affinity for it and loves sitting in it, so as soon as it was available, in she went!

Almost everything in my house has the sniffles
Except Patrick and Widget, who both feel better. Now it's Monkey, Gurgles and myself. This cold hasn't progressed into anything worse, it's just lingering a bit. Monkey and Gurgles both have a cold that they caught from Widget. Who knows where she got it... Kitty colds are just so pitiful. Monkey will sneeze a couple times, sniffle a little, then look at me with overwhelming sadness like she can't believe I'm letting such a thing happen to her. Sigh. Gurgles is obviously ill, judging by the exponential decline in how much he's airborne during the day. Poor sick kitties.
I'm so looking forward to this three-day weekend and then a week-long break the week of Thanksgiving. Our entire household could use some rest and relaxation. I really hope we aren't all still sick when the holiday rolls around. Probably won't be... *knock on wood*

If only all classical music were as accessible
My mom sent me this video, and I loved it. Patrick and I were speaking the other day about how there is so much beautiful, passionate classical music out there, but people tend to think it's boring and unrelatable. A lot of the wonderful stuff is Russian (see Mussorgsky's Night on Bald Mountain and Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, to name just a couple), and I wish symphonies would play more of that, along with pieces like the one shown below, the final movement of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
All these pieces give me chills for various reasons when I hear them. Beethoven's Ninth with the glorious chorus at the end, Night on Bald Mountain in the beginning with the creepy violins that build into that demonic brass chord series (Patrick played this gorgeously), and Scheherazade for its arrogant sultan's tones (also played to perfection by my very own spouse a while back).
I wish classical music was portrayed in a better light. Maybe more of these flash mob-type things would help. And if classical stations would quit playing that intensely boring stuff that is like one flute and a couple violins for 30 minutes straight. Give us some meat and brass! I never properly appreciated trombones until I married someone who plays one professionally. Now I do. There is no instrument in the orchestra that can deliver power like a trombone.
In other musical news, we finally got our piano tuned. The process was utterly excruciating, but it's now finished and I can play the damn thing without wanting to stab myself in the eyeball because it's so horrendously out of tune.
Along with people sniffles in our house, we have kitty sniffles. Widget has gotten over her cold, but now Gurgles has it. Sigh. I guess it's that time of year. Hopefully all the illness goes away before the holidays. I hate being sick when I'm supposed to be eating piles of food. Kinda makes Thanksgiving dinner a little pointless if you can't taste any of it.

Dear god, I am so old.
I must be. I was just reading this Cracked article about various types of costumes, and I am the Grown-Up.
I've spent most of today thinking about how tired I am and how I can't wait to go back to bed. This was not helped by people telling me both that I look tired and that I look like I'm getting really sick (I'm not, this is just what my FACE looks like, people.) I have nowhere to be tonight, and I wish I was wearing a sweater...
I didn't even get into a costume for work today because I have to take the Widget to the vet afterward (she has a cold), and it was pouring, and I just... couldn't. No energy. Still wiped out after the Great Patrick Asthma Adventure, I guess. Or maybe it's these pills? I don't know.
Anyway, I tried imagining myself going to some Halloween party. I got there and had a beverage and then I guess I imagined a really shitty party or something, because my imaginary self got fed up and told the fake partygoers that they were all stupid and a waste of my time, and then stalked out. So that was a bust.
Even imaginary me is crotchety. This is the END, y'all.
Next step is Depends and worrying about bingo wings flapping around in my muumuu when I play bridge with Ethel and Maude next weekend. /facepalm
Happy Halloween, you kids.

My furry practicing partner
The Widget has been keeping me company while I practice. She seems to enjoy it. This is the piece I'm working on, Pachelbel's Canon in D. It's very pretty and it has a lot of variations on a single theme (six pages' worth). It's not difficult, and it's a good way for me to remember how to read bass clef and get my fingers slowly stronger again. Patrick gets to hear it over and over! haha Fortunately he's a musician, so he can appreciate the necessity of playing things a million times. I'm very lucky to have him.

Phantom Hairball
Normally we all sleep together in a pile on the bed, and last night was no different. Usually (looking from the head of the bed to the foot) Patrick's on the right, Gurgles is between his feet, I'm on the left, Widget's to my left, and Monkey's at my feet. That is a lot of bodies on one bed.
Anyway, we were all asleep when suddenly around 4am I woke up to the sound of Widget in the beginning horky throes of coughing up a hairball right next to my head. I was barely awake, so all I had time to think was Widget... NO, OFF! My sleepy self decided the best way to avoid a hairball on the face was to shove her off the bed, so I did that with one arm, and then flailed around with it making sure she wasn't on the night stand about to throw up all over my phone.
Patrick woke up partially at some point around here. It's hard to sleep through simultaneous puke noises and wife flailing, even for him.
I came to a bit more and went out to the kitchen to get some paper towels, as I was sure by the sound of it she'd splattered hairball all over the wall or something, and coming back in I told Patrick to close his eyes so I could turn on the light without blinding him. I looked around for a while on my hands and knees and nothing, so I went around the house looking for where she might have dumped it. No hairballs anywhere.
Either being shoved off the bed interrupted her hairball progression and it never happened at all or there is something unpleasant waiting for me somewhere...
