Plants are taking over our bathroom.

Also, the orchids are blooming again. Only two out of three, but that ain't bad.

Yes, that purple thing you see is yet another origami crane. There's a mobile in our bathroom featuring both cranes and crystals. Gurgles enjoys spending afternoons catching the rainbows it throws off.
The white one with the pink centers is the plant I originally posted pictures of when I first got it and someone had turned it blue via food coloring. This is how it looks naturally. The black line is the cord to my curling iron.
I'm very above it all in this one. We went on a sushi date last night, so I fancied myself up again.

This was the only good picture I got, sadly. For some reason my camera fu wasn't really functioning at full capacity. The sushi chef approved. He said I looked like a doll! Very sweet. I think if I were really going for actual Doll Mode, though, I'd need some special contacts like my friend Rei has. Hers are amazing. I just can't get that huge-eyed look without them.

P.S. I promise I'll stop posting pictures of myself now. I'm not actually that self-absorbed. It's just that I realized I'm going to be a million years old some day and then I'll be sad if I don't at least have something to remind me how once I didn't look like a dessicated potato. Youth! I totally didn't appreciate you when I was in my 20s. So by god I am going to wallow around in you now.

I told myself I wasn't going to mention these anymore until they were done, but I can't help it.

We did the first test recording of Calling to the Night last night, and it went great! We'll do a few more takes, and there's some harmonizing that needs to be added in, but it shouldn't take too long before we have a finished track. It's a really weird gig harmonizing with yourself. I can't wait until it's finished and you guys can hear it! I hope you like it.

So far this month is very productive. Along with the music stuff, we did another 40 cranes last night, so we only have 60 to go! My art project from April is nearly complete... Whee! I'll post pictures when it's done, and possibly video, depending on my bravery and the state of my hair.

Happy Friday everyone!

The handsome man I married

Also, the opera he's currently playing (Turandot) was well-reviewed in the Seattle Times. These pictures were taken right after he returned from a performance this weekend.

The only part I care about in the review: "What with Barbe's stunning sets and costumes, and equally stunning work by Beth Kirchhoff's chorus and by the orchestra under Asher Fisch's baton, the production, dedicated to the memory of veteran Seattle Opera benefactor Marion Oliver McCaw Garrison, is all together a triumph. Don't miss it."

Taco Inventors Extraordinaire

The past couple of evenings I've been reading through my Mexican cookbook (pictured above) and marking down recipes that I want us to try. I love this book. It doesn't have very many pictures, but it does have a really nice, conversational tone with stories from the author's time in Mexico and lots of good advice. One of these helpful observations is that once you've got the hang of making tacos, you can make them out of almost anything you have lying around the house.

Given that, Patrick and I decided to collaborate and try to create something tasty with what we had in the house. This turned out to be the following:

Corn tortillas
Sour cream
Milk
Chipotle chiles in adobo
Frozen corn
Garlic
Butter
Dried onion flakes

Our tortillas were a bit stale, so when we dropped by Plaza Latina to get coconut we also picked up some more of those, along with cotija cheese and dried epazote (Mexican herb). I'd originally envisioned us getting some mushrooms to put in the tacos as well, but that didn't end up happening.

Patrick created a delicious (although very hot) sauce with the chiles, milk and cream in the blender, and added it to the corn he'd been cooking with garlic and onion in a bit of butter. It needed a little salt, so we added that with the epazote, and then he put in a couple drops of liquid smoke to increase the smokiness of the mixture. I incompetently grated cheese (and managed to get it all over the floor; I'm a terrible cheese grater) until he took over to save me from myself, and cut up galia melon for later. I was going to cut up our papaya too, but it wasn't ripe yet.

We heated up the corn tortillas in the microwave for 30 seconds and then used them to make tacos with a bit of corn filling and then a few pinches of cheese on top. Very tasty! I think we might try and use the rest of the sauce in some other dishes this week, maybe camarones enchipotlados if I get ambitious. It'll have to be mostly me making this, as Patrick has rehearsals all this week, but you never know. We already have the sauce, so all I'd really have to do is make soupy black beans, rice, and add some shrimp. That'd be pretty easy. We shall see.

In other news, our crane count is at 910. I intend on making more tonight, and we'll see how far I get. The last two will be love letters written on heart-covered origami paper and then read before being folded up. I can't remember if I already mentioned that or not, but now you know. Hard to believe I started this little project back in April, whew! Monkey will be so sad when it's all done...

The Great Crane Thief Plays With Her Loot

It dawned on me last night as I was watching Monkey with her purloined crane that my phone can actually take videos now, so here you go. She's gotten really sneaky about it. She pretends to be all loving and cuddly, so she'll come sit between your arms and purr until you are put off your guard. Then she goes in for the theft!

Pictures as promised

Trying this from new Blogger app. My poor phone is geriatric so this is a stretch. Hopefully it works. In the picture with the leaf, that's my whole forearm and hand. I guess I could've used my upper arm too, but you get the idea. Huge!

And we are now at 850 cranes. Just a few more strands to go. Five on one side and four on the other, I believe.

Ambien is making typing this difficult so I'm gonna go sleep. Love y'all!
