Gnawing on the ivories

I've been practicing piano on and off in the evenings, and Monday I played for about 45 minutes or so, until my fingers were very tired. You know you've played a lot when your finger muscles start burning from use! (Or that your hands are really out of shape, one of the two...)

After about 20 minutes, I got a visitor!
He was pretty snuggly about it, and he didn't hamper my playing too much, except for when my right hand would go down the keys and apparently invade what he considered his personal bubble. Then he'd bite my hand (gently), lick it afterward, and gurgle quietly to himself about his victory.

I have a cold, and I'm not feeling very creative.

So in the meantime, please enjoy these pictures of Monkey being irked that I was in a bunch of water and she couldn't come sit on me.

Why are you sitting in the tub?
Can I sit in this? Looks suspicious.
I can stand on the edge! Precariously.
This is called a bath bomb. It fizzes and gives you silky, good-smelling water.
I got mine free, and it was called Twilight. Note the sparkles, haha.
After bath. All is right with her kitty world again.
Not very attractive last picture, but hey, it's hard to take pictures of yourself with a cat on you. And also with the sniffles. At least Monkey was pleased. Happy weekend, everybody.

The very picture of domestic bliss

Gurgles noticed I made the mistake of sitting down for a minute in a very fluffy dress, and immediately availed himself of it. He loves all things fluffy. I'm wearing my black 50s dress with the white polka dots, a red petticoat underneath, and my great-grandmother's apron on top (the red and grey flowered business). It makes for a very old-fashioned outfit, and the perfect kitty sleeping spot, according to Dr. Phineas Gurglepurr!

Cotton candy sky

While we were making dinner this evening, I went out to water the fuchsia and noticed that the whole yard looked kinda weird, all pink and red. I honestly wondered if the neighborhood was on fire (not entirely unreasonable, as we've had a lot of fire weather warnings, even west of the Cascades), and looked up at the sky. This is what I saw:

That, ladies and gentlemen, is one hell of a sunset. I couldn't see the sun itself, as it had sunk too far down, but the sky was certainly still vibrant. Much less scary than spiders, mmm? haha

Patrick practicing his early Christmas present

I love listening to him play. The instrument has such a warm sound, and he spent a bit of time learning guitar a while back, so he is picking it up again very quickly.

I played more piano last night and ran through a few exercises after Pachelbel, plus adding The Music of the Night from The Phantom of the Opera. I'd learned it on organ quite a few years ago, so it wasn't difficult to pick up again. While I was playing it (slowly, figuring out the chords), I had a sort of mental breakthrough. All of a sudden the bass clef started making sense to me and I could remember what the notes were without transposing them in my head! (If you can't read bass clef but you can read treble, there's a trick for it: just take whatever note it would be in treble clef and transpose it up two whole steps. So what looks like an F is an A. This information, if I recall, was imparted to me by a drummer some time ago. Gracias!)

I'm not amazing with bass clef by any means, but at least now I can read the damn thing again. Playing clarinet for years did nothing to help me retain my memories of the lower clef, and I was never as proficient as I was with treble. But perhaps I will improve significantly with ongoing practice. We shall see!

Tree in the garden of good and evil [finished]

Hey y'all. I know I said I was going to update that other post, but it was getting a little confusing to edit. I'm going to scan this thing in at work tomorrow and upload the scanned image if you want to print it out or whatever, but in the meantime here it is with a couple filters applied to it. I find that they make very interesting phone backgrounds! (I'm currently using the reddish one as it matches my phone.) I tried to crop out the edges of the pad, but they're still present a little bit. Anyway, they'll be gone when it's scanned. Enjoy, and as usual click the pictures for larger/clearer versions.
