The job that never was

There was this time I nearly had a job in retail, believe it or not.

This vaguely bohemian clothing store named Shirazi in Seattle was where I bought a few of my clothes, and I was always a big fan of the styles they offered. I waxed enthusiastic about a dress I was buying there one day, and the owner commented on how I’d be a great employee, seeing as I loved the clothes. She was right, and I probably would’ve been. She was really nice, too, so that just kind of adds to the regret pile.

Anyway, I needed a job at the time and she agreed to interview me, so a-interviewin’ I went. We chatted for a bit and she told me about the job. It would’ve been only part time, but hey, when you need cash, you’ll take most stuff. I guess she liked me, so she offered me the job, and I accepted.

PLOT TWIST!

Right around this same time, an ex-lover who was a personal trainer from California had come up to visit me, and we’d been chatting over coffee about how sick I was of the whole scene up here. I’d gotten divorced and was miserable with my job problems and whatnot. There wasn’t really much keeping me in Seattle, so he offered me a place to stay in Sacramento until I’d gotten my act together and found a job down there.

This seemed like a good idea for some reason (I was on psych meds at the time, so perhaps that explains it), and I gleefully accepted. I let Shirazi’s owner know that I was suddenly going to be moving to California, so I’d have to decline the position, which was really too bad because it probably would’ve been fun.

Of course, since I don’t live in California, you’ll have deduced that this didn’t work out. Indeed it did not. After returning to his place, he’d apparently come to the conclusion that it would be too stressful or weird or (pick your adjective) for me to stay with him, despite the fact that we’d stayed together before for a week or so and he’d thoroughly enjoyed my company. (I make excellent chicken soup, for your information.)

I really could’ve stabbed him for that, but I wasn’t about to try and talk him into it. So I was left with no permanent job and nowhere else to go. Fortunately it was around that time that a hotel decided to hire me, and I remained there until I found a way back into my actual profession approximately a year later.

So glad I did. I love the peace and quiet (for the most part) that surrounds science, and it's wonderful to be part of something aimed at trying to make the world a better place. It's a clean and orderly sort of vocation, and it suits me.

I hope you all are having as beautiful a Friday as we are in the Pacific Northwest, and that your weekends are everything wonderful they could possibly be.
